Integrating attribute and space characteristics in choropleth display and spatial data mining

چکیده
This paper develops an interactive approach for exploratory spatial data analysis. Measures of attribute similarity and spatial proximity are combined in a clustering model to support the identi cation of patterns in spatial information. Relationships between the developed clustering approach, spatial data mining and choropleth display are discussed. Analysis of property crime rates in Brisbane, Australia is presented. A surprising nding in this research is that there are substantial inconsistencies in standard choropleth display options found in two widely used commercial geographical information systems, both in terms of de nition and performance. The comparative results demonstrate the usefulness and appeal of the developed approach in a geographical information system environment for exploratory spatial data analysis.

Polygonization of Point Clusters through Cluster Boundary Extraction for Geographical Data Mining
Interpretability and usability of clustering results are of fundamental importance. A linear time method for transforming point clusters into polygons is explored. This method automatically translates a point data layer into a space filling layer where clusters are identified as some of the resulting regions. The method is based on robustly identifying cluster boundaries in point data. The clus...
متن کاملChoroWare: A Software Toolkit for Choropleth Map Classifications
When exploratory spatial data analyses are conducted, choropleth mapping is an important means to display 1) the patterns of the spatial observations for enumeration areas, such as counties or Census Tracts, and 2) the resulting spatial statistical outcomes. Choropleth maps group spatial observations into classes and each class is then assigned a particular color that is used to shade the enume...
متن کاملChoropleth Maps: Classification Revisited
Classification was traditionally used as an instrument for producing choropleth maps. In our study we consider the role of the process of classification in exploratory data analysis. We developed a set of tools for classification that facilitate looking on data from various viewpoints and thereby investigate different aspects of the data. The tools include direct manipulation controls for speci...

Traditionally, areal interpolation has referred to techniques for transferring attribute values from one partitioning of space to a different partition of space but this is only one of several situations that create the need for estimating unknown data values for areal units. This paper presents a categorization of four areal interpolation problems that includes the ``missing'' data problem, th...
متن کاملA Microsoft VBA Application for Generating Heat Maps
A choropleth map is a form of thematic map used to portray the structural characteristics of some particular geographical distribution not apparent in data presented in tabular form. Preparation of a choropleth map starts with the assignment of map features to classes based on the value of a specific feature attribute followed by the association of classes of features with appropriate map color...
